2016 MLS Power Rankings: Week 29

Reuters

Week 29 of the 2016 MLS season saw three teams clinch playoff berths as a result of the New York Red Bulls' win over the Montreal Impact. The Red Bulls, joined by Toronto FC and New York City FC, have now booked their spots in the postseason, though the LA Galaxy cannot say the same just yet.

Here's how each team ranks this week:

1. Toronto FC (-)

  • Last Week: 1-1 draw vs. Philadelphia Union
  • Next MLS Match: Wednesday, Sept. 28 vs. Orlando (7:30 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
13-8-9 45 33

With news that Sebastian Giovinco is in Italy for treatment, Toronto FC should be in no rush to bring him back now that a playoff berth has been clinched.

2. FC Dallas (-)

  • Last Week: 0-0 draw vs. Real Salt Lake
  • Next MLS Match: Saturday, Oct. 1 vs. LA Galaxy (9:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
15-8-8 47 39

We want to believe the FC Dallas hype but the team came up short once more when presented with an opportunity to widen its gap atop the overall standings.

3. New York City FC (+1)

  • Last Week: 4-1 win vs. Chicago Fire
  • Next MLS Match: Friday, Sept. 30 at Houston (8:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
13-9-9 55 53

New York City FC gets a nice +1 bump for brushing Chicago aside but the big story is securing a playoff berth in just its second year as an MLS franchise.

4. New York Red Bulls (+2)

  • Last Week: 1-0 win vs. Montreal Impact
  • Next MLS Match: Saturday, Oct. 1 vs. Philadelphia (7:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
13-9-9 53 40

The New York Red Bulls took on a tricky Montreal side, kept a clean sheet, limited chances, and scored with one of the few it mustered - that's more like it.

5. LA Galaxy (-2)

  • Last Week: 4-2 loss vs. Seattle Sounders
  • Next MLS Match: Saturday, Oct. 1 at Dallas (9:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
11-5-15 53 38

Ouch. A massive loss for the LA Galaxy keeps playoff celebrations at bay for at least one more week. It might prove a good lesson for Bruce Arena, though.

6. Real Salt Lake (+1)

  • Last Week: 0-0 draw vs. FC Dallas
  • Next MLS Match: Saturday, Oct. 1 at San Jose (10:30 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
12-10-9 42 42

Real Salt Lake has often relied on its attackers to bail the team out of trouble but against FC Dallas, its defenders deserve all the praise.

7. Colorado Rapids (-2)

  • Last Week: 3-3 draw vs. Vancouver Whitecaps
  • Next MLS Match: Saturday, Oct. 1 vs. Portland (9:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
12-5-12 32 27

The Colorado Rapids have been so strong defensively that it's a wonder how Vancouver managed to sneak three past Tim Howard, the last one coming late.

8. Philadelphia Union (-)

  • Last Week: 1-1 draw vs. Toronto FC
  • Next MLS Match: Saturday, Oct. 1 at NY Red Bulls (7:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
11-11-9 50 48

The Philadelphia Union will look forward to the return of Tranquillo Barnetta but Alejandro Bedoya proved himself quite an adaptable No. 10 as well.

9. Sporting Kansas City (+2)

  • Last Week: 2-1 win vs. San Jose Earthquakes
  • Next MLS Match: Saturday, Oct. 1 at New England (7:30 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
12-12-7 39 38

Sporting Kansas City is quietly going about its business and is setting itself up to be something of a dark horse in the MLS postseason. Keep an eye out.

10. Seattle Sounders (+2)

  • Last Week: 4-2 win vs. LA Galaxy
  • Next MLS Match: Wednesday, Sept. 28 vs. Chicago (10:30 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
11-13-5 38 39

The Seattle Sounders are the league's hottest team heading into the playoffs and yet they remain behind the red line. A few more wins and they might sneak in.

11. Portland Timbers (-2)

  • Last Week: 3-1 loss vs. Houston Dynamo
  • Next MLS Match: Saturday, Oct. 1 at Colorado (9:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
11-12-8 46 48

"One step forward, two steps back" has become the unfortunate story of the Portland Timbers' 2016 season.

12. D.C. United (+1)

  • Last Week: 4-1 win vs. Orlando City
  • Next MLS Match: Wednesday, Sept. 28 vs. Columbus (7:30 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
8-9-13 43 41

D.C. United will use the feel-good result over Orlando as a confidence boost but the result is diluted a touch by the simple fact that the Lions are in free fall.

13. Montreal Impact (-3)

  • Last Week: 1-0 loss vs. New York Red Bulls
  • Next MLS Match: Wednesday, Sept. 28 vs. San Jose (7:30 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
9-10-11 43 47

Winless in their last four matches, and with only two victories in the last 10 fixtures, the Montreal Impact are in a downward spiral.

14. Vancouver Whitecaps (+2)

  • Last Week: 3-3 draw vs. Colorado Rapids
  • Next MLS Match: Sunday, Oct. 2 vs. Seattle (8:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
9-14-8 40 49

The Vancouver Whitecaps battled back to earn a 3-3 draw and while it wasn't pretty, Carl Robinson's side will feel bolstered by the result.

15. New England Revolution (-1)

  • Last Week: 2-0 loss vs. Columbus Crew
  • Next MLS Match: Saturday, Oct. 1 vs. Sporting KC (7:30 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
9-13-9 37 51

The New England Revolution finally slipped below the Eastern Conference red line, with the worst goal differential across the league - not good.

16. San Jose Earthquakes (-1)

  • Last Week: 2-1 loss vs. Sporting Kansas City
  • Next MLS Match: Wednesday, Sept. 28 at Montreal (7:30 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
7-9-13 28 32

The San Jose Earthquakes are lucky there are worse teams in the league, because they'd certainly be at the bottom of our boredom rankings.

17. Houston Dynamo (+1)

  • Last Week: 3-1 win vs. Portland Timbers
  • Next MLS Match: Friday, Sept. 30 vs. NYCFC (8:00 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
7-11-11 36 38

It's the little victories that the Houston Dynamo are celebrating now. This is one of them.

18. Columbus Crew (+1)

  • Last Week: 2-0 win vs. New England Revolution
  • Next MLS Match: Wednesday, Sept. 28 at D.C. United (7:30 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
7-11-11 42 46

If we told you that the Columbus Crew somehow has a player in the MLS Golden Boot race, what would you say? Well ... Ola Kamara has 15 goals now.

19. Orlando City (-2)

  • Last Week: 4-1 loss vs. D.C. United
  • Next MLS Match: Wednesday, Sept. 28 at Toronto (7:30 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
7-10-13 49 57

Another 4-1 loss!? It seems inconceivable, and yet, for the fourth time in a row, the Lions have lost after conceding four goals. Down, down, down they go.

20. Chicago Fire (-)

  • Last Week: 4-1 loss vs. New York City FC
  • Next MLS Match: Wednesday, Sept. 28 at Seattle (10:30 p.m. ET)
Record (W-L-D) Goals For Goals Against
6-14-9 36 48

Chicago Fire fans, we've got nothing for you. Head back to camp.
