Ridgewell signs contract extension with Timbers

The Portland Timbers announced Thursday that team captain Liam Ridgewell has signed a contract extension for an unspecified term, reported to be a two-year deal according to Jamie Goldberg of The Oregonian.

Ridgewell, currently a Designated Player, will see his wages categorized under the league's Targeted Allocation Money in 2017.

That would presumably mean his $1.1-million annual salary has been reduced to around - or under - the $800,000 range, in order to accommodate that designation.

Ridgewell, 31, has made 63 appearances for the Timbers over the the past three seasons, guiding the team to an MLS Cup victory last year. The two-time MLS All-Star defender has previously enjoyed stints at Aston Villa, Birmingham City, and West Brom.
