Toronto FC star Giovinco to miss 4 weeks with quad, adductor strains

Toronto FC's aspirations of capturing top spot in the Eastern Conference - and potentially challenging for the Supporters' Shield - were dealt a massive blow on Monday, as the club announced that reigning MLS MVP Sebastian Giovinco is expected to miss four weeks with quad and adductor strains.

The pint-sized superstar sustained the injuries during Saturday's 1-0 loss to the Montreal Impact, crumbling to the pitch in the second half before gingerly walking off and being substituted.

The 29-year-old, coming off the most dominant campaign in Major League Soccer history, has once again been virtually unstoppable in 2016.

The Italian attacker sits tied atop the league scoring chart with 16 goals, and is second in assists - his 13 helpers trailing only Sacha Kljestan (15).

The timeline for his two muscular strains will likely see Giovinco miss at least four MLS matches, with the Oct. 1 clash against D.C. United appearing to be the most realistic target for a return to action.

If nothing else, manger Greg Vanney can take some solace in the fact that Jozy Altidore has been firing on all cylinders since his own return from injury. Without Giovinco, the American will be relied upon heavily as TFC looks to keep pace at the top of the Eastern Conference.

The Reds find themselves two points up on New York City FC for first place.
