Report: Aston Villa contemplating £3M bid for DeAndre Yedlin

DeAndre Yedlin may have to drop a division for first-team football.

Aston Villa is considering a £3-million bid for the marauding right-back after its new manager, Roberto Di Matteo, identified him as a viable alternative to Leicester City's Ritchie De Laet, according to The Telegraph's John Percy.

The U.S. international spent a season on loan with Sunderland last term, and there were reports that the club was interested in making the move permanent, leaving the Black Cats potentially squabbling with Villa of the Championship for his signature.

Aston Villa's director of recruitment, Paddy Riley, has apparently tracked Wolverhampton Wanderers' Dominic Iorfa for some time too, but brokering a deal for the 21-year-old could prove too costly.

Yedlin is crowded out from starting XI consideration at White Hart Lane. Kyle Walker appears to be first choice under Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino, with Kieran Trippier proving an able deputy in 2015-16. Therefore, the door is open for Yedlin to leave after signing a pre-contract from the Seattle Sounders in 2014.

After a limp 20th-placed finish in the Premier League last season, new club chairman Tony Xia tried to engineer an instant return to the top flight for Aston Villa. He has already laid down £12 million on Ross McCormack, but may complement him further in the strikeforce with either Chelsea's Patrick Bamford or Huddersfield Town talent Nahki Wells.

Aston Villa has started the season with four points from three matches, and continues its campaign at Derby County on Saturday.
