Former Juventus midfielder Andrea Pirlo says he and his teammates were flabbergasted with Paul Pogba's quality when he left Manchester United for Turin for a paltry €925,000 in 2012.

A 19-year-old Pogba slipped through the net at Old Trafford after limited first-team opportunities under then-manager Alex Ferguson, but now new boss Jose Mourinho has ensured the Frenchman's return for a world-record €105 million this summer.

"On the first day training session Pogba had with Juventus the players were laughing," remembered Pirlo, now of Major League Soccer's New York City FC.

"We were not laughing for any other reason than we were just in total disbelief that this player with so much obvious ability was able to leave a club the size of Manchester United for free - and I think Juventus are still laughing."

Pogba's arrival following the expiration of his United deal did incur some fee after a tribunal, but the amount was derisory considering the global star that developed in the Old Lady's midfield.

Pirlo is sure that Juventus wouldn't have been keen to let Pogba go, but congratulates his former employer for conducting great business in securing such a lofty number for the 23-year-old.

"They signed a player of his quality for no money, he was a big part of them winning trophies in four seasons, and they then sell him for £90 million. Whatever way you look at it, Juventus have got a great deal."

Pogba was suspended from Sunday's season opener at Bournemouth on Sunday carrying his two yellow cards over from Coppa Italia duty last term. The world's most expensive footballer will instead be in contention to make his second United debut against Southampton on Friday.
