The Portland Timbers announced Wednesday that midfielder Diego Valeri has signed a contract extension that will see him stay on as a Designated Player, though specific terms were not disclosed.

The 30-year-old creative attacker from Argentina joined the club in 2013 and has made 106 regular-season appearances, scoring 33 goals and recording 40 assists.

He played a vital part in the Timbers' 2015 MLS Cup-winning campaign, making five playoff starts, scoring one goal and recording four assists. This season, Valeri has notched 10 goals and five assists and is set to surpass his best-ever scoring season with two more goals.

Valeri will retain his Designated Player roster spot and stay in the city he said captured his heart.

"We love Portland," Valeri told Jamie Goldberg of The Oregonian in 2014. "We think we'll live in Portland after I retire because this is a great city. We have lived in Spain, Portugal, Argentina, but for me, it's the best city. We have traveled a lot in the USA and we have seen other places. There are really nice places, but Portland is unique."
