The Vancouver Whitecaps announced Saturday that the club acquired Jamaica forward Giles Barnes from the Houston Dynamo in exchange for General Allocation Money.

The Dynamo also received the Whitecaps' right of first refusal for defender Keyner Brown as part of the deal.

The 28-year-old has 34 goals in 131 matches for the Dynamo and once featured for Premier League outfit West Brom.

"Giles is a dynamic offensive player in the prime of his career," Whitecaps head coach Carl Robinson said in a statement. "He knows MLS, has experience at the top levels in England, and is a great character in the locker room. We're very excited to add him to our group."

He joins a Whitecaps team that recently sold newly acquired forward Fabian Espindola and Designated Player striker Octavio Rivero, and will compete with Blas Perez for a starting role up top.

"We'd like to thank Giles for all of his contributions both on and off the field during his time in Houston and we wish him well," Dynamo general manager Matt Jordan said in a statement. "We felt this move was in the best interest of our club moving forward, providing us with valuable roster and budget flexibility while bringing in valuable assets both in the short and long term.

"This move also provides a greater opportunity for our younger attacking players to make an impact this season."
