Portland's Borchers to undergo season-ending Achilles surgery

Portland Timbers will be without centre-back Nat Borchers after the Cascadians confirmed Monday that the defender will undergo surgery to repair a ruptured left Achilles tendon.

The bearded Borchers, 35, picked up the injury during the first half of Saturday's match against the LA Galaxy and will now miss the remainder of the season, according to a statement on the Timbers' website.

Tough break for Caleb Porter and Co., as Borchers started all but one of the Timbers' fixtures this season, and played an instrumental role in the club's MLS Cup Final win over the Columbus Crew last season. It was the second title of Borchers' MLS tenure after winning the 2009 edition with Real Salt Lake.

Borchers updated his condition with a Tweet on Monday.

The club confirmed that the operation will be scheduled after further evaluation of the injury.
