Kansas City-Colorado preview

Sporting Kansas City will try the seemingly impossible -- at least so far in 2016 -- as it travels to Commerce City, Colo., on Saturday and attempts to hand the Colorado Rapids their first loss of the season at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.

Colorado (9-2-7, 34 points and in second place in the Western Conference) is 7-0-2 at home. They also are on a 13-game unbeaten streak that began April 13 with a victory at Children's Mercy Park in Kansas City. Colorado has won both of the meetings against Kansas City this season.

Kansas City (8-9-4, 28 points) is stinging from a 1-0 loss at Chicago on Wednesday, when the visitors controlled 68 percent of the possession and out-shot the home team 20-3. The loss extended SKC's winless streak on the road to 0-5-3 since winning their first two road matches of the season.

The Rapids claimed a dramatic road draw last Saturday against the Vancouver Whitecaps, trailing 2-1 in second-half stoppage time and down a man after Eric Miller had been sent off 25 minutes earlier. But Kevin Doyle, who had scored Colorado's first goal of the game, clipped a far-post cross to defender Axel Sjoberg for the tying goal in the 95th minute.

Doyle leads the Rapids with four goals, while Luis Solignac and U.S. Men's National Team midfielder Jermaine Jones have three apiece. The Rapids are 5-0-3 when Jones plays. Colorado also added USMNT veteran goalkeeper Tim Howard when the summer transfer window opened July 4. He has made eight saves in two games, a pair of road draws against Vancouver and Portland.

Sporting KC likely will be using another different starting lineup because of injury. Center backs Matt Besler and Nuno Coelho returned to the starting lineup against Chicago, but Coelho suffered a first-half hamstring injury and is out.

Chance Myers (hamstring), Paulo Nagamura (thigh) and Graham Zusi (hamstring) remain questionable for SKC. The Rapids will be without defenders Bobby Burling (knee) and Sean St. Ledger (knee).
