D.C. United announced Thursday the club has acquired winger Lloyd Sam in a trade with the New York Red Bulls in exchange for General Allocation Money.

"Lloyd is a dangerous winger and has challenged us for years with the Red Bulls," D.C. general manager Dave Kasper said in a statement. "He is a creative player who not only generates many chances from wide areas with quality service but he is also a proven goal scorer."

Sam, 31, joined the Red Bulls in 2012 and has since scored 20 goals and recorded 22 assists in 106 league appearances.

“Lloyd has been a key member of our family and we thank him for all of his contributions to our club, both on and off the field," Red Bulls sporting director Ali Curtis said in a statement. "The quality of Lloyd’s character and the talent that he possesses made the decision to trade Lloyd extremely difficult.

"With that said, this move allows us flexibility if we want to add another piece to our team moving forward."

Being a long-standing member of the Red Bulls, Sam took to Twitter to express his surprise with the news:

Sam, who earns $240,000 per year, joins a D.C. United team looking to further evolve, with head coach Ben Olsen telling Goff the club has "got some money" and is "looking to spend it."

The English-born attacker recently earned an international call-up with Ghana.
