Voyageurs Cup: Vancouver stumbles as Toronto FC defeats Montreal Impact

The Vancouver Whitecaps suffered a blow in the club's defense of the Amway Canadian Championship title Wednesday, losing 2-0 to North American Soccer League outfit Ottawa Fury away at TD Place in the Canadian capital.

Having already eliminated NASL opponents FC Edmonton from the competition, Ottawa continued its campaign for the Voyageurs Cup with Jonny Steele and Paulo Junior both finding the back of the net against the Whitecaps.

Steele's goal, in particular, was a thing of beauty:

Elsewhere, Toronto FC and the Montreal Impact renewed a heated rivalry at BMO Field, with the Reds scoring four goals via homegrown talent before Didier Drogba inspired a comeback to cut the lead in half.

Toronto-born regular Jonathan Osorio scored a pair of goals - as did 20-year-old Scarborough, Ontario native Jordan Hamilton - against an Impact side reduced to 10 men after Patrice Bernier was ejected for a rough tackle.

But the Reds could not hold on to their four-goal cushion. Drogba assisted Michael Salazar and then scored a free-kick in the last five minutes of play.

The Whitecaps and the Impact now face two-goal deficits in the return leg on June 8, with Montreal holding two precious away goals that might prove the undoing of Greg Vanney's youth-infused Canadian side.
