Jimenez scores in 90th and Crew tie Union 1-1

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Hector Jimenez scored in the 90th minute to lift the short-handed Columbus Crew into a 1-1 tie with D.C. United on Saturday night.

Jimenez took a long ball from Wil Trapp on the left flank and fired a perfect shot from 18 yards into the upper right corner for his first goal of the season.

''I saw a little gap and was luckily able to bend it in there,'' Jimenez said.

The Crew (3-1-2) were playing with 10 men after Bernardo Anor was sent off for a two-footed tackle on Perry Kitchen in the 81st minute.

''What I like the most is our team didn't back down when we were down a man,'' Jimenez said.

The Crew appeared headed to a second straight home shutout defeat before Trapp tracked down D.C. forward Fabian Espindola as he headed toward the Columbus goal.

Trapp quickly turned the play the other way with a 40-yard pass to Jimenez.

''We gave the ball away in a bad spot and we were on a 3 v. 2 counter,'' Trapp said. ''I guessed right on Espindola cutting back. I saw Hector was open. He did the rest. The finish was perfect.''

That D.C. was unable to put the match away despite the extra player bothered D.C. coach Ben Olsen.

''It's a good sign, a point at Columbus, but it feels bad right now,'' he said.

D.C. (2-2-2) took the lead in the 31st minute off a turnover created in the midfield by Nick DeLeon, who stripped the ball from Federico Higuain.

DeLeon split two defenders with a ball that Espindola ran onto down the left side. Espindola overpowered goalkeeper Steve Clark to the near post.

''It was a little frustrating to give up the goal when we had more of the ball,'' Trapp said. ''We were just a little off on a couple of giveaways, but mistakes will happen.''

Controversy ensued in the 71st minute when D.C. forward Eddie Johnson was pulled down just outside the penalty area by Giancarlo Gonzalez, the last defender for the Crew. Gonzalez was issued a caution but D.C. thought he should have been shown a red card.

''I'm not going to go that road,'' Olsen said when asked about the officiating.
