Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder A.J. Pollock suffered a fractured right elbow while sliding into home plate Friday night and will require surgery, the team announced.

Pollock suffered the injury while successfully sliding past Kansas City Royals catcher Salvador Perez at home plate in the second inning. Pollock immediately clutched his right elbow after attempting to push himself off the ground, and was in considerable pain while being consoled by team trainers.

Pollock was playing for the first time since March 8 in an attempt to be in game shape prior to Arizona's season opener Monday against the Colorado Rockies.

Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale made the announcement after the 7-4 victory over the Royals. There was no immediate word on how much time Pollock will miss.

The 28-year-old established himself as one of the top center fielders in baseball last year, hitting .315/.367/.498 with 20 homers and 76 RBIs while stealing 39 bases in 157 contests.
