Encarnacion moving on after extension deadline passes

Spring training wasn't very kind to Edwin Encarnacion.

It began with dental surgery, followed with a sore oblique, and wrapped up without a single major-league at-bat or a contract extension from the Toronto Blue Jays front office.

Encarnacion is in the final year of his deal and informed the Blue Jays of a self-imposed deadline that ended Opening Day. As the slugger took the field Monday without a new contract, he officially stopped thinking about negotiations.

"That's why I wanted to do it the way I did it, because after today I don't want to talk anymore or anything like that," Encarnacion told Shi Davidi of Sportsnet. "I just want to focus on my game and focus on my team and focus on winning games."

Encarnacion is entering his eighth season with the Blue Jays and has been adamant about wanting to remain in Toronto, but acknowledged last month that he doesn't believe the two sides will reach an agreement. He reiterated that sentiment Sunday.

"If they were going to do something, I was ready," Encarnacion said. "I know I want to stay here, I'd love to stay here, but it's not my decision, it's not something I can control. I'm going to focus on my season and see what's coming."
