Butch Dill / USA TODAY Sports

Bryce Harper's first homer of the spring was a no-doubter off 2011 American League Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander, who entered Sunday's contest having tossed three consecutive scoreless spring outings.

The reigning National League MVP got to the Detroit Tigers righty again in the fifth inning, blasting a solo shot to center field to put the Washington Nationals up 3-0.

"I got through it with minimal damage, I guess, unless you count distance," Verlander joked postgame after tossing five innings of three-run ball.

Harper's now hitting .333/.429/.625 with two homers and five RBIs in 18 at-bats.

Verlander's numbers have also been impressive this spring, posting a 2-0 record with a 1.93 ERA over 14 innings of work.

Detroit won the contest 7-6 thanks to a four-run eighth inning.
