Encarnacion: Blue Jays have no plans for me to stay

Edwin Encarnacion isn't optimistic about his chances of remaining with the Toronto Blue Jays beyond this season.

"I'm really disappointed that nothing has happened, but it's not my decision," Encarnacion told the Toronto Sun's Bob Elliott on Saturday. "They don't have it in their plans for me to stay here."

A report surfaced earlier this week that Encarnacion and the Blue Jays had hit a roadblock in negotiations over potential contract length. The slugger also revealed the two sides hadn't even discussed money yet.

Encarnacion has a self-imposed Opening Day deadline for a contract extension, so it's likely he'll hit the open market this fall if a deal isn't struck by the time the regular season opens on April 3.

"I tried to do the best for my team, I feel as if I have done all I can do for my team," Encarnacion added. "I want to be here for a long time."

Encarnacion has not yet suited up this spring due to a strained oblique and a dental emergency, and there's still no timetable for him to return to game action.

The 33-year-old hit .277/.372/.557 with 39 home runs and 111 RBIs in 146 games for Toronto last season.

Jose Bautista is also slated to become a free agent at the conclusion of the 2016 campaign, complicating matters for Toronto's front office.
