Padres sign Friedrich to minor-league deal

The San Diego Padres added a former first-round draft choice to their depth charts on Thursday, signing left-hander Christian Friedrich to a minor-league deal with an invite to spring training.

Friedrich participated in workouts with the club on Thursday morning.

The 28-year-old pitcher had a bit of a roller-coaster offseason after being designated for assignment by the Colorado Rockies in late January.

Friedrich looked to have landed with the Los Angeles Angels via waiver claim on Feb. 5, but was returned to the Rockies - who would later release him - after undisclosed medical issues arose.

Apparently the Padres saw no issue with the hurler's health, adding him to spring camp as someone who could compete for a spot in the team's bullpen.

Friedrich owns a career ERA of 5.19 in 100 big-league appearances, 19 of which have been starts.
