Report: Pirates agree to minor-league deal with Matt Joyce
With only four days until position players report to spring training, the Pittsburgh Pirates decided to bolster their outfield depth, reportedly agreeing Thursday to a minor-league deal with Matt Joyce, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.
Joyce endured the worst season of his eight-year career in 2015, stumbling to career-lows in batting average (.174), on-base percentage (.272), slugging percentage (.291), and wins above replacement (-1.4) while appearing in just 93 games - his fewest since 2010 - with the Los Angeles Angels.
Still, the 31-year-old managed a .778 OPS (118 OPS+) over the five seasons prior, and will now compete for a spot on the Pirates' bench. An All-Star in 2011, Joyce has enjoyed great success against right-handed pitching throughout his career, and could also serve as a left-handed complement to Starling Marte, or as potential insurance for 24-year-old Gregory Polanco.
