Report: Rays in 'advanced talks' with Hunter

Reuters

After trading away one of their top relievers for offense last month, the Tampa Bay Rays are looking to free agency for bullpen help.

The Rays are reportedly involved in advanced talks with right-hander Tommy Hunter, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. Topkin notes that no deal appears to be close however, and that Hunter is also talking to other clubs.

Following back-to-back strong seasons, Hunter regressed in 2015. The 29-year-old posted a 4.18 ERA and 1.24 WHIP across 60 1/3 innings split between the Baltimore Orioles and Chicago Cubs. He owns a 3.26 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, and 4 strikeout-to-walk rate over the past three years.

In addition to Hunter, the Rays have also reportedly been in talks with right-handed reliever Ryan Webb, according to Topkin. The 30-year-old crafted a 3.20 ERA and 1.14 WHIP in 50 2/3 innings in 2015.

Tampa has been looking to add a veteran reliever since trading left-hander Jake McGee to the Colorado Rockies in exchange for Corey Dickerson two weeks ago.
