With pitchers and catchers reporting to spring training in a week, shortstop Ian Desmond remains jobless, but that could change soon as interest in the 30-year-old is picking up.

The Chicago White Sox are among the teams considering Desmond, reports MLB Network's Jon Heyman.

Despite a thin shortstop market, Desmond hasn't received much interest throughout the offseason.

The San Diego Padres engaged in talks with Desmond, but instead signed Alexei Ramirez to fill their void at the position.

Desmond, who rejected a $15.8-million qualifying offer in November, would be an upgrade over the inexperienced Tyler Saladino who's projected to start at shortstop for the White Sox.

Signing Desmond wouldn't cost the White Sox their No. 10 overall draft pick as it's protected.

With top prospect Tim Anderson in waiting, Desmond may not get a multi-year deal from Chicago, but he could re-build his value and enter free agency once again at season's end.

Desmond hit .233/.290/.384 with 19 home runs and 62 RBIs for the Washington Nationals last season, while setting a career high in strikeouts with 187.
