Report: Yankees among 3 teams pursuing Ike Davis

Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

Free-agent first baseman Ike Davis is beginning to draw interest with spring training quickly approaching, and one potential suitor could bring the 28-year-old back to the city where he started his career.

Davis is expected to sign a minor-league contract shortly and the New York Yankees are in the mix, reports Ken Davidoff of the New York Post, while MLB Network's Jon Heyman writes that three clubs are in pursuit.

If the Yankees acquired the former first-round pick, he'd likely get a shot to back up Mark Teixeira at first base with Greg Bird lost for the 2016 season after undergoing shoulder surgery.

The Yankees currently have Dustin Ackley slated to back up Teixeira, who missed the last two months of the season with a right leg fracture.

Davis, a former starting first baseman for the New York Mets - who hit a team-high 32 home runs in 2012 - appeared in 72 games for the Oakland Athletics last season, hitting .229/.301/.350 with three home runs and 20 RBIs.

He missed substantial time after hip surgery and was non-tendered in December.
