Stammen lands minor-league deal with Indians

The Cleveland Indians will have a local boy compete for a spot in their bullpen this spring after agreeing Monday to a minor-league deal with right-hander Craig Stammen that includes an invitation to spring training.

Stammen, who grew up about 225 miles west of Cleveland and attended the University of Dayton, missed most of the 2015 campaign with a forearm injury and was non-tendered by the Washington Nationals in December. Though the soon-to-be 32-year-old made just five appearances last season, Stammen fashioned a 2.93 ERA with a 50.7 percent ground-ball rate from 2012 through 2014, averaging 54 appearances per year over that span.

Season G ERA GB% HR/9
2012 59 2.34 45% 0.71
2013 55 2.76 59.7% 0.44
2014 49 3.84 48% 0.62
2015 5 0.00 54.5% 0.00

"What I'm going to have to do is prove that I'm healthy and prove that I'm the same pitcher I was in 2014 and even at the very start of 2015 before I had the injury, which I don't feel will be that difficult," Stammen told James Wagner of the Washington Post in December.
