Report: Teams have 'kicked tires' on Angels' Wilson

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Angels' highest-paid pitcher has generated some interest on the trade front.

Several teams have "kicked tires on" left-hander C.J. Wilson, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network, though he notes nothing is alive at the moment.

Owed $20 million in the final year of his deal, Wilson was limited to 21 starts during an injury-shortened 2015 season, going 8-8 with a 3.89 ERA and 110 strikeouts across 132 innings.

Wilson, who can block a trade to eight teams, opted to shut himself down in early August following a diagnosis of a left elbow impingement. That decision reportedly drew the ire of several of his teammates, as he underwent the procedure rather than try and finish off the year. The surgery isn't expected to prevent the 35-year-old from being ready for the start of spring training.

The Angels have had a relatively quiet offseason - despite numerous needs around the diamond - due to owner Arte Moreno's reluctance to surpass the luxury tax threshold. Moving some of Wilson's salary could perhaps open the door for the Angels to have more financial flexibility.
