D-Backs GM expects to reach out to Clippard

The Arizona Diamondbacks have been one of the busiest and most aggressive teams of the offseason, signing right-hander Zack Greinke to a rich, long-term deal, while trading for pitcher Shelby Miller and infielder Jean Segura.

One area Diamondbacks general manager Dave Stewart would still like to address, however, is the team's bullpen, and right-hander Tyler Clippard may be an option.

"We have not talked to his people, (but) that is a good name," Stewart told Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic. "I know we talked about it internally, so I think there’s a pretty good possibility we will (reach out), at least just to see."

Stewart thinks going after a free agent like Clippard is his team's only viable option with the trade market for relief help so pricey.

"We could look at what’s left on the free-agent market," Stewart explained. "I keep getting pushed back to the same position: Trading three or four prospects for seventh-inning guys is probably not something I want to do."

Clippard, 30, proved to be a strong late-inning option with both the Oakland Athletics and New York Mets last season, posting a 2.92 ERA with 19 saves and 64 strikeouts across 71 innings of work.

The veteran reliever earned $8.3 million last season.
