The New York Yankees had a big blow delivered to their depth charts before entering spring training when promising young first baseman Greg Bird was lost for the season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn right labrum in his shoulder.

Although his season is over before it even started, Bird was all smiles post-surgery when he posted a photo of himself in recovery mode, accompanied by a heartfelt message to the Yankees fan base.

Bird, 23, was expected to act as insurance in case injuries plagued the aging bodies of Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez.

The slugging youngster belted 11 home runs and 38 RBIs for the club last season in just 178 plate appearances.
