D-Backs acquire Segura in 5-player deal

Arizona Diamondbacks general manager Dave Stewart continued to overhaul his club Saturday, pulling the trigger on a five-player trade with the Milwaukee Brewers.

The D-Backs sent second baseman Aaron Hill, right-hander Chase Anderson, minor-league shortstop Isan Diaz, and cash considerations to the Brewers in exchange for shortstop Jean Segura and righty Tyler Wagner, both clubs announced.

Hill, a 2009 All-Star, hit .273/.331/.439 with 55 homers and 241 RBIs over five seasons in the desert. He's set to earn $12 million in 2016, and will become a free agent this fall. It's unclear how much cash Arizona is sending to Milwaukee in the deal, but it's believed the cash is being included to help offset roughly half of Hill's salary.

Segura, who has stolen 20 or more bases in each of the last three seasons, earned an All-Star nod in 2013, and slashed .257/.281/.336 with six homers and 50 RBIs last year. The 25-year-old is under team control through 2019, and will be eligible for arbitration for the first time in 2017. His departure should clear the way for top prospect Orlando Arcia to get some playing time in Milwaukee.

"In Chase Anderson and Aaron Hill, we are adding two proven major-league contributors who will impact our team this year," said Brewers general manager David Stearns. "Chase is a young starting pitcher who was already enjoyed success at the major-league level. Aaron has a long history of production and positional versatility.

"In addition, we are excited to be able to add Isan Diaz to our growing supply of high upside minor-league talent."

Anderson, who compiled a 6-6 record with a 4.30 ERA and 1.29 WHIP over 27 starts in 2015, is controllable through the 2020 season, and should compete for a spot in the rotation this season.

Diaz, a 19-year-old prospect, batted .360 with 13 homers and 51 RBIs in 68 games at Rookie Missoula last season, earning Pioneer League MVP honors.

Joining Segura in Arizona will be Wagner, a pitching prospect who went 11-5 with a 2.24 ERA while amassing 120 strikeouts in 25 starts at the Double-A level last season. A fourth-round selection of the Brewers in the 2012 draft, the 25-year-old also made three starts at the big-league level in 2015, posting an 0-2 record with a lofty 7.24 ERA.

Segura is the latest high-profile addition for Stewart, who pulled off a blockbuster trade for right-hander Shelby Miller and signed crafty righty Zack Greinke to a mammoth six-year, $206.5-million deal, earlier this offseason.
