Report: Reds agree to minor-league deal with Jonathan Sanchez

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Jonathan Sanchez, the famously erratic left-hander who hasn't pitched in the majors since 2013, will try to revive his career in Cincinnati after reportedly agreeing Friday to a minor-league deal with the Reds, according to MLB.com's Mark Sheldon.

Sanchez, a fixture in the San Francisco Giants' rotation from 2008 to 2011 before control problems derailed his career, has been mostly absent from affiliated baseball for the last two seasons. In 2014, Sanchez was released by the Cubs following one appearance for Triple-A Iowa, and the 33-year-old hadn't thrown a single professional inning until recently re-emerging with Indios de Mayagüez of the Puerto Rico Winter League.

Despite his spotty track record, Sanchez will likely be given an opportunity to compete for a job on the 25-man roster this spring with the Reds firmly in rebuild mode. None of the pitchers tentatively expected to earn spots in Cincinnati's rotation have more than 36 starts at the MLB level, after all, and the bullpen remains thin with Aroldis Chapman set to debut in New York.

Sanchez still has a lot to prove, though, considering how fiercely his MLB career fizzled. After being traded by the Giants to Kansas City following the 2011 campaign, Sanchez totally imploded, bouncing around to several organizations as he tried in vain to recreate the success he enjoyed in San Francisco.
