Report: Yankees, Rockies talked Reyes swap last summer

The Colorado Rockies reportedly had a taker for Jose Reyes last summer, shortly after they landed the shortstop from the Toronto Blue Jays in late July.

The Rockies and New York Yankees talked about different ways to make the move work, sources told Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, though the two sides never got close on a deal.

With Didi Gregorius locked in at shortstop, the Yankees would have moved Reyes and his declining defense to second base. Rosenthal notes that the Rockies would have been required to eat a large portion of the remaining $48 million remaining on Reyes' deal.

Reyes, who spent nine seasons in New York with the Mets, is currently slated to stand trial in Hawaii in April on domestic abuse charges following an altercation with his wife in October while on vacation.

The Yankees filled their need at second base by trading for Starlin Castro in December, sending right-hander Adam Warren and infielder Brendan Ryan to the Chicago Cubs in return.
