Arroyo lands minor-league deal with Nationals

Bronson Arroyo, who hasn't pitched in the majors since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2014, will attempt to revive his career in the nation's capital after agreeing Tuesday to a minor-league deal with the Washington Nationals.

Arroyo, who turns 39 next month, will get an invitation to MLB spring training, where the veteran right-hander will likely compete with Tanner Roark for the fifth spot in Washington's rotation.

Despite not throwing a competitive pitch since June of 2014, Arroyo had also drawn interest this offseason from the Miami Marlins, according to Peter Gammons, while FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported that the Cincinnati Reds were interested in a reunion with the colorful hurler.

Before having his ulnar collateral ligament repaired in 2014, Arroyo was among the most durable starters in baseball, logging at least 32 starts (and 199 innings pitched) per season from 2005 through 2013. During that span, he also earned an All-Star appearance and a Gold Glove Award while finishing 12th in NL Cy Young voting in 2010.

Arroyo, who made his MLB debut in 2000, owns a 4.19 ERA (103 ERA+) with a 2.38 strikeout-to-walk ratio across stints with the Reds, Pittsburgh Pirates, Boston Red Sox, and Arizona Diamondbacks.
