Report: Marlins offered Ozuna to Rangers, Reds for pitching
The Miami Marlins' sustained efforts to move outfielder Marcell Ozuna this offseason reportedly included separate trade offers to the Cincinnati Reds and Texas Rangers in exchange for starting pitchers.
According to the Miami Herald's Barry Jackson, the Marlins made specific proposals to both clubs, but negotiations failed to advance further after neither the Reds nor Rangers met Miami's asking price. Earlier this month, the Herald reported that the Rangers and Marlins were discussing a trade involving Ozuna and Texas right-hander Chi Chi Gonzalez.
Both proposals preceded the Marlins' reported signing of free-agent left-hander Wei-Yin Chen, who's said to be in agreement on a five-year, $80-million contract with Miami. The club has yet to confirm the deal.
Ozuna's name has been the subject of persistent trade rumors this offseason following reports that Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria "can't stand" the 25-year-old slugger. Ozuna regressed significantly in 2015 after a breakout campaign the season before, slashing just .259/.308/.383 with 10 home runs in 123 games. His forgettable season also included a demotion to the minors.
It was reported last week that new manager Don Mattingly and hitting coach Barry Bonds petitioned against trading the power-hitting Dominican, citing his combination of speed and power. According to the Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo, the two coaches believe they can reinvent Ozuna into a 30/30 performer.
Ozuna had his best season in 2014, when he hit 23 homers and posted a .772 OPS in 153 games.
