Report: Padres agree to 1-year deal with Alexei Ramirez
The San Diego Padres have addressed one of their most important offseason needs, agreeing to a one-year deal with shortstop Alexei Ramirez, according to MLB Network's Jon Heyman.
The deal's financial details were not disclosed and is pending a physical.
San Diego was closing in on a decision about the shortstop over the past two days, and the deal for the Cuban came to fruition quickly. The Padres also weighed Ian Desmond as an option.
The 34-year-old Ramirez, who won't cost the Padres draft-pick compensation after having his team option declined by the Chicago White Sox, had a disappointing 2015 campaign after being named an All-Star the year prior.
Ramirez had a nice run over eight seasons with the White Sox, though, hitting .273/.310/.399 with 109 home runs, 542 RBIs, and 135 stolen bases, while adding himself to their record books as one of three players in franchise history to earn 100 home runs and 100 stolen bases.
PLAYER | HR | SB |
---|---|---|
Minnie Minoso | 135 | 171 |
Ray Durham | 106 | 219 |
Alexei Ramirez | 109 | 135 |
His .249/.285/.357 slash line in 2015 was a career low in all three categories, but he still managed 10 home runs and 62 RBIs in 154 games.
