Jocketty says it's unlikely Reds trade Phillips

Cincinnati Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips doesn't appear willing to be part of the mass exodus from the rebuilding club.

The three-time All-Star refused to waive his full no-trade rights in order to accept a deal to the Washington Nationals last month, leaving president of baseball operations Walt Jocketty to concede to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer that trading Phillips is now unlikely.

Phillips has become a fan favorite in Cincinnati over the past decade, and reportedly wanted a "significant benefit" in order to approve the deal to the Nationals.

The 34-year-old, who has two years and $27 million remaining on his deal, is coming off a season in which he hit .294/.328/.395 with 12 home runs and 23 stolen bases.

While he's still a productive player, Phillips' unwillingness to leave Cincinnati is problematic for the club, as he blocks the second-base position for prospect Jose Peraza. The 21-year-old was acquired in December from the Los Angeles Dodgers and projects to be major-league ready after a strong season in Triple-A.

The Reds have already shipped veterans Aroldis Chapman and Todd Frazier away this winter in return for prospects.
