Report: Tigers still discussing Cespedes, other top free agents

Brad Penner / USA TODAY Sports

The Detroit Tigers may still be in the market for some of the top free agents still available.

Detroit has discussed the possibility of signing Yoenis Cespedes, Justin Upton, Chris Davis, Dexter Fowler, or Ian Desmond, according to MLB Network's Jon Heyman.

The Tigers have an obvious need in left field, but the team has already taken on a significant amount of salary this offseason with the additions of Cameron Maybin, Francisco Rodriguez, and Jordan Zimmermann, among others. Heyman believes Detroit may elect to sign a more affordable option, such as Ryan Raburn, to fill its outfield void.

Jose Iglesias, who put up strong numbers when healthy last season, should maintain his status quo as the Tigers' everyday shortstop, so the team's internal discussions surrounding Desmond, who is rumored to be in talks with the San Diego Padres, is surprising.

Detroit missed the postseason for the first time in four years in 2015, posting a 74-87 record to finish in the basement of the American League Central.
