Mariners, Cook agree to 1-year deal

The Seattle Mariners agreed to a one-year deal with right-handed reliever Ryan Cook on Thursday.

An All-Star in 2012, Cook struggled with injuries last season. In nine appearances between the Oakland Athletics and Boston Red Sox, he allowed 19 runs (18 earned). The 28-year-old owns a 3.43 ERA and 1.24 WHIP across 207 career innings.

"We’re looking forward to seeing Ryan in a Mariners uniform," general manager Jerry Dipoto said in a statement. "He remains just 28-years-old and is just one season removed from being one of the more effective setup relievers in the American League. His presence enhances both our bullpen depth and overall upside."

The Mariners released reliever Anthony Bass earlier Thursday so he could pursue an opportunity in Japan.
