Braves agree to 1-year deal with Kelly Johnson

Brett Davis / USA TODAY Sports

The Atlanta Braves augmented their infield depth with a familiar face Friday, agreeing to a one-year, $2-million contract with Kelly Johnson.

Johnson, who turns 34 in February, is poised to begin his third stint with the club that selected him with the 38th pick in the 2000 draft. The versatile veteran spent the first four years of his career in Atlanta, where he managed a .777 OPS across 490 games, and reunited with the club last offseason after stints with six different teams.

Though Johnson opened the 2015 campaign with the Braves, hitting .275/.321/.451 (114 OPS+) in 62 games, he was traded to the New York Mets in July, appearing in 49 contests for the eventual National League champions. Johnson finished the regular season with 14 homers and a .750 OPS, his best since 2010.

Over parts of 10 seasons in the majors, Johnson has hit .251/.331/.424 with a 10.2 percent walk rate and 22.5 percent strikeout rate, playing primarily at second base while also logging at least 60 games played in left field, third base, and first base.
