Report: Dodgers unlikely to trade for Marlins' Fernandez

After reportedly agreeing to a deal with Japanese right-hander Kenta Maeda on Thursday, shortly after signing left-hander Scott Kazmir, the Los Angeles Dodgers no longer seem inclined to work out a trade for Miami Marlins star Jose Fernandez, according to Jon Morosi of FOX Sports.

Fernandez's name has been bandied about in trade rumors all offseason, with the Dodgers reportedly discussing a deal with the Marlins as recently as last week. However, it now appears Los Angeles won't trade for the 23-year-old barring a dramatic turn of events, Morosi noted.

Maeda's deal has not yet been confirmed, but even if the reported agreement with the Dodgers doesn't come to fruition, Los Angeles may still not be willing to pay Miami's reportedly astronomical asking price for the former All-Star.

Though reported tension between Fernandez and the Marlins' front office have allowed trade rumors to persist, several team officials have refuted those claims, with Marlins president David Samson telling reporters last week that "there is no rift with Jose."

Earlier this week, Fernandez's agent, Scott Boras, insinuated on MLB Network Radio that he expects his client - now entering his first season of arbitration eligibility - to remain in Miami for the 2016 campaign, at least.

"When you have a lot of great young players - particularity young players who their salaries are just at the beginning level of their careers - teams are going to always ask about them," Boras said. "Rarely are they ever traded and I think that's the case with Jose as well."
