Report: Dodgers, Marlins remain in discussion about Fernandez

Though trade talks regarding Marlins right-hander Jose Fernandez were thought to be fading earlier this month, the Los Angeles Dodgers are reportedly still keen to pry the 23-year-old away from Miami.

The Dodgers remain in discussions with the Marlins about a possible deal for Fernandez, according to FOX Sports' Jon Morosi, though a trade is not close.

Less than two weeks ago, the Dodgers reportedly broached the possibility of including a third team in a deal for Fernandez, who has drawn interest throughout the league despite assurances from Marlins president of baseball operations Michael Hill that the former All-Star is "not available."

Discussions of a three-team deal for Fernandez never materialized, but talks with the Marlins may have gained momentum after Los Angeles augmented their already impressive farm system in the three-team trade that sent Todd Frazier to the Chicago White Sox last week.

Still, even with the additional prospect capital, the Dodgers may not be willing to meet Miami's reportedly astronomical asking price for Fernandez. According to Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald, the Marlins discussed a deal with the Diamondbacks that would've sent five players - including left-hander Patrick Corbin and shortstop Dansby Swanson, the top pick in the 2015 draft - to Miami in exchange for Fernandez, but talks crumbled after Arizona acquired Shelby Miller from the Atlanta Braves.

The Dodgers' rotation remains somewhat unsettled, however, after the club failed to re-sign right-hander Zack Greinke - he landed a six-year, $206.5-million from Arizona - and backed out of a widely reported three-year deal with Hisashi Iwakuma amid concerns over his health.

Fernandez, who remains under team control through 2018, owns a 2.40 ERA (160 ERA+) over parts of three seasons in the majors, and posted a 2.92 ERA with a career-best 5.64 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 11 starts in 2015 after returning from Tommy John surgery in July.
