Moreno: Angels 'probably' out on Cespedes, Gordon, Upton

Making a big splash in free agency isn't something the Los Angeles Angels have shied away from in the past, but this offseason may be different in regards to adding one of the open market's highly sought-after outfielders.

Angels owner Arte Moreno told reporters Wednesday the club is probably not in contention for the services of Yoenis Cespedes, Alex Gordon, or Justin Upton.

"Right now if I had to make a decision we'd probably be out," he said of the trio of big-ticket free agents.

He also said the club never made an offer to Jason Heyward, who signed an eight-year contract worth $182 million with the Chicago Cubs.

Moreno's claim comes after the Angels acquired low-risk additions Daniel Nava and Craig Gentry to accompany Mike Trout and Kole Calhoun in the team's outfield.

Hours after adding Nava, general manager Billy Eppler told Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times the team is still talking to other outfielders, but based on what Moreno had to say, it won't be for one of the big three available.

"We are still engaged in conversations with other outfielders," Eppler explained.

The Angels could instead turn their attention to Denard Span, Gerardo Parra, and Dexter Fowler, who highlight a list of top second-tier outfielders available in free agency.
