Report: Yankees discussing trade for Cubs' Castro

The New York Yankees haven't been very active in the free-agent or trade market to this point in the offseason, but that could be on the verge of changing.

New York is talking to the Chicago Cubs about a trade involving middle infielder Starlin Castro, according to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal.

Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein acknowledged he's getting closer to a deal Tuesday evening, and that he's trying to sync up a trade with a free-agent signing.

It's unclear what the Yankees would potentially send the Cubs in return, but Castro would represent an upgrade at second base for New York over Rob Refsnyder.

Chicago has an obvious need at center field after losing Dexter Fowler to free agency, and may also be seeking pitching depth.

Castro, who is under contract until 2019 and slated to make just under $8 million next season, appeared in 38 games at second base for the Cubs last year after Addison Russell burst onto the scene at shortstop.

The 25-year-old hit .265/.296/.375 with 11 homers and 69 RBIs in 151 contests.
