Braun supports rebuild, doesn't expect to be traded

The Milwaukee Brewers are a transitioning team, and that suits veteran outfielder Ryan Braun just fine.

Braun took part in the club's annual Thanksgiving food drive Wednesday, and took the time to address the rebuilding phase the team is entering ahead of the 2016 season.

"It's not like we're coming off a great year or great stretch of years," Braun told the Journal Sentinel's Tom Haudricourt. "It's not like we're breaking up this juggernaut team. When you keep perspective, what we were doing wasn't working. We're now in the best division in baseball, the most competitive division in baseball. I think, without a doubt, they're doing what's in our best interest long-term."

Trade rumors are swirling around some of the other veterans on the Brewers, including Jonathan Lucroy and Adam Lind, but Braun is under contract through the 2020 season with a massive contract, making him virtually impossible to deal.

"When I signed the contract, my goal was to be here," Braun said. "That's still the intention. I haven't heard anything different. So, unless I heard something different, the goal will be the same as it has always been."

Braun and the Brewers hold a mutual option with a $4-million buyout for the 2021 campaign. The 32-year-old underwent offseason back surgery, and is also still dealing with a chronic nerve issue in his right thumb. He expects to be fully ready for spring training, though.

"Knock on wood, it shouldn't have much impact on my offseason program much at all other than doing a few more rehab exercises," he said. "A couple of things I used to do workout-wise I probably won't do any more."

The six-time All-Star and 2011 National League MVP is still owed a staggering $96 million through 2020, and hit .285/.356/.498 with 25 homers and 84 RBIs in 140 games last season.
