Report: Nationals showing interest in Zobrist

The Washington Nationals have joined the growing amount of clubs interested in Ben Zobrist, Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports reports

Rosenthal writes that many other teams are also interested in the super-utility player as well, so the Nationals would have quite a bit of competition for his services.

The New York Mets have reportedly shown a high amount of interest in the versatile slugger, so Washington could not only address its need for an infielder, but also keep him away from a division rival by acquiring Zobrist.

Washington employed free agent Ian Desmond at shortstop, with a mix of Anthony Rendon, Danny Espinosa, and Dan Uggla at second in 2015, so the addition of Zobrist would give the team added flexibility and a potential everyday shortstop if it decided to use him that way.

Zobrist spent time at second, third, designated hitter, and all three outfield positions last season and also carries 229 games of experience under his belt at shortstop.

He hit .276/.359/.450 with 13 home runs and 56 RBIs split between the Oakland Athletics and Kansas City Royals in 2015. He was also clutch in the Royals' World Series-winning postseason run, batting .303/.365/.515 with two home runs and six RBIs.
