Report: Padres expected to tab McGwire as bench coach
After spending the last three seasons as the Los Angeles Dodgers' hitting coach, Mark McGwire will reportedly start a new gig in southern California this summer, as he is expected to be named the San Diego Padres' bench coach, according to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman.
McGwire, the 12-time All-Star that smashed 583 home runs over parts of 16 seasons in the majors, will assume the role previously held by new Dodgers manager Dave Roberts.
McGwire, a California native, received his first MLB coaching job in 2010, when he took over as hitting coach for the St. Louis Cardinals, the team that employed him for the final (and most memorable) stretch of his playing career.
McGwire isn't the only Padres instructor set to handle a new set of responsibilities this summer, though, as Andy Green was named manager last month despite no previous experience in that role at the MLB level.
