Ben Zobrist was a major contributor to the defeat of the New York Mets in the World Series, and next season he could end up helping them in their bid to win it all.

The Mets are "very interested" in acquiring the 34-year-old super-utility player, Tim Rohan of the New York Times reports.

Zobrist engaged in a conference call with the Mets on Wednesday, and his representation also sat down with New York at the general manager meetings, so something could be cooking between the two parties.

With last season's second baseman Daniel Murphy also available on the open market, the Mets could be looking to fill his void with Zobrist, who is a better defender and has been a more consistent offensive performer throughout his career.

CAREER NUMBERS

PLAYER HITTING DRS
Daniel Murphy .288/.331/.424 2
Ben Zobrist .265/.355/.431 31

Zobrist hit .276/.359/.450 with 13 home runs and 56 RBIs split between the Oakland Athletics and Kansas City Royals in 2015.
