Report: Mets unlikely to covet top-tier free-agent outfielders
Armed with one of the best young rotations in baseball, New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson will look to boost the club's offense this offseason.
While the Mets are reportedly expected to make an offer to Yoenis Cespedes after he almost single-handedly injected life into their offense following his deadline acquisition, they aren't expected to meet his contract demands.
The same goes for fellow top-tier outfielders Jason Heyward and Justin Upton, as both are likely to demand contracts exceeding $100 million - a figure Alderson isn't expected to entertain.
There still remains plenty of intriguing options for the Mets, with at least three potential names on Alderson's list, according to Marc Carig of Newsday.
Carig notes that early indications suggest the Mets will target former Washington Nationals center fielder Denard Span. Gerardo Parra and Dexter Fowler are also potential options, though Fowler could be further down the list after the Chicago Cubs extended a $15.8-million qualifying offer.
LAST TWO SEASONS
Player | GP | HR | SB | AVG/SLG/OBP |
---|---|---|---|---|
Span | 208 | 10 | 42 | .301/.358/.421 |
Fowler | 272 | 25 | 31 | .261/.358/.406 |
Parra | 305 | 23 | 23 | .276/.318/.411 |
Outfielders Curtis Granderson, Michael Cuddyer, Michael Conforto, and Juan Lagares are all under contract next season, though both Cuddyer and Lagares struggled in 2015 and the Mets are likely looking for more offense.
