Heyward received a qualifying offer from the Cardinals on Friday.

Analysis:

This move was considered a formality, as the 26-year-old is on the cusp of a mega-deal heading into the offseason. St. Louis has repeatedly stressed they would like to bring their outfielder back, but Heyward's age and terrific 2015 season may have priced him out of the Cardinals budget. He could receive a contract worth nearly $200 million this offseason, but it remains to be seen which clubs may be in the running for his services.
