Mets limit Harvey to 5 innings with game well in hand

In a perfect world, Matt Harvey would be pitching in either the first or second game of any potential playoff series, but having the "Dark Knight" throw Game 3 of the NLDS worked out for the New York Mets.

The right-hander, who is only starting one game in the series against the Los Angeles Dodgers due to medical concerns about his surgically repaired elbow, labored through five innings of work Monday night while throwing 97 pitches in his playoff debut.

"You know, even though he didn't have his best stuff, you still think he's going to win," manager Terry Collins said about Harvey's gritty five-inning performance after the Mets' 13-7 win. "That's the demeanor he carries throughout (the game)."

Harvey got into a bases-loaded jam in the top of the second inning, and Yasmani Grandal made him pay with a single to right field that scored a pair. Carl Crawford also came around to score on a throwing error to give Los Angeles an early 3-0 lead.

Mets hitters, though, went on to score 10 runs over the next three innings to earn Harvey the win.

Harvey, who had a recommended 180-inning limit this season, has now thrown 194 1/3 frames to this point.
