Adam Wainwright's first playoff relief appearance since 2006 couldn't have gone any better.

The two-time World Series champion retired all five batters he faced in the St. Louis Cardinals' 6-3 loss to the Chicago Cubs in Game 2 of their NLDS showdown.

Wainwright, who missed the majority of the regular season after tearing his Achilles, even struck out the side in the eighth inning.

"Those moments [like] today, you never ever, ever forget those kinds of things," Wainwright said following the outing. "That was just so special. The crowd embraced me. Hair was standing up on my arms like crazy, with chill bumps, when the gate opened and they started going crazy. I was trying to do my very best to control my emotions."

The righty has not allowed a run in 10 career postseason relief appearances (11 innings), and is surely giving manager Mike Matheny a reason to consider him for a start somewhere down the playoff line, depending on how far the Cardinals advance.
