Blue Jays replace injured Cecil with Tepera on ALDS roster

The Toronto Blue Jays lost one of their most potent bullpen weapons on Friday after left-hander Brett Cecil tore his calf in a rundown.

Toronto announced Saturday that Cecil will be replaced on the American League Division Series roster with rookie right-hander Ryan Tepera.

With the Blue Jays lacking left-handed depth in the organization, the team was forced to add another righty in Tepera to a bullpen that includes Aaron Loup as its only southpaw option.

Tepera appeared in 32 games for the Blue Jays in his rookie campaign, posting a 3.27 ERA and one save, and has reverse splits against opponents. Right-handers are hitting .235 against the 27-year-old, while lefties managed a .137 average.

Cecil allowed a lone hit and no runs in two postseason appearances before going down with the injury and will not be eligible to make the American League Championship Series roster if Toronto advances.

The left-hander confirmed in a press conference on Saturday that he'll avoid surgery and his season is done.
