Former GM Towers: Epstein will do anything to win

David Banks-US PRESSWIRE

Theo Epstein helped end the Boston Red Sox infamous World Series drought in his time with the club as general manager. Now he's trying to do the same as president of baseball operations for the Chicago Cubs, who play the Pittsburgh Pirates in the National League wild-card game Wednesday.

Former Padres and Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers offered a particularly gruesome description of Epstein's zeal for winning to Scott Miller of Bleacher Report.

"There were times I'd tell him, 'Theo, I love you like a brother, but there are times I don't trust you. I think you'd probably slit my neck and cut my throat to win,'" Towers said.

"He said, 'You're probably right.'"

Epstein has been with the Cubs since 2011 after accepting a five-year, $18.5-million contract.

This is the team's first postseason appearance during his tenure.
