Mets hopeful Matz can pitch in NLDS after bullpen session

The New York Mets want to see Steven Matz factor into the National League division series, and things are moving in the right direction for that to happen.

Matz threw a bullpen session Tuesday at Citi Field that pitching coach Dan Warthen said went well, according to Adam Rubin of ESPN.

If Matz continues to show progress after pitching in the instructional league on Thursday, where he's estimated to throw around 90 pitches, he could slot in to pitch Game 4 of the NLDS against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Mets will take an extra pitcher to Los Angeles in case Matz isn't ready to go. The team will announce a decision on Friday morning.

The 24-year-old left-hander hasn't appeared in a game since Sept. 24 because of spasms in his upper back.

Jacob deGrom, who will start Game 1 of the series, or veteran Bartolo Colon could get the nod if Matz is unable to pitch.
